Hideki Tojo became Prime Minister of Japan in 1941. He was also know as "the Razor". This was because he was very sharp minded man. Throughout 1941 Japan and America tried to negotiate, but this unfortunately didn't work out for them. Tojo believed that Japan needed more power and with this he headed south and took over much land. After much land was taken over, Tojo was convinced that avoiding war with America wasn't an option. He then set out for America and had given up on peace.
Tojo had decided that attacking America with a surprise attack would be the best way of going. The Japanese navy set sail for Pearl Harbor. This was the location of where the U.S. Navy main Pacific base was. Commander Vice Admiral Chuichi Nagumo took charge with his 6 aircraft carrieirs, 360 airplanes, and his wide range of battleships. Tojo served as the military leader of Japan until 1944. He realized that the war had changed for the worse. He was forced to resign on July 18, 1944. After the war ended, he tried to kill himself, but American soldiers had saved his life. He was tried and Tojo was guilty of war crimes. He was then up for punishment and was executed on December 23, 1948. |
