World War II was mainly caused by World War I tensions. In the 1919, Germany was forced to sign the Treaty of Versailles, and accept responsibility for World War I. They were not allowed a large army, and had to pay for damages caused by
the war. As a country, Germany could not afford to pay this money, and the people became very poor, as well as being hungry and jobless. The people were upset with the government, and needed someone new to put their trust in. Adolf Hitler was appointed chancellor of Germany, but soon became out of control. Hitler promised to help end Communism, so when he began building up the military, France and Britain weren’t concerned. Hitler made pacts with Italy and Japan, giving him back up power. Hitler began fighting to have all of Germany’s land restored to them. Fearing another war, the powerful countries of Britain and France let this happen, as they believed Hitler was somewhat justified in his actions. In the end of 1938, Germany, Britain, France, and Italy signed the Munich Pact stating that Sudetenland would be given back to Germany, and that Germany would stop trying to reclaim lost land. It was a successful peace negotiation. Adolf Hitler committed suicide on April 30, 1945. The Second World War ended on May 8, 1945, after Germany had surrendered unconditionally. This is celebrated with VE Day, or Victory in Europe Day. However, even thought the war was finished in Europe, it was still going on in western countries. Japan did not give up, resulting in the two atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August. Japan surrendered on September 5, 1945. |
