Edouard Daladier was born on June 18, 1884 in Carpentras, France. He was a part of the Radical Party, and, in 1911, he became the leader of the party. Daladier held many military jobs over the next 22 years.
In 1933, Daladier became the Prime Minister of France. His governments left something to be desired however, as the first one failed in only seven months, and the second one in a matter of a few short weeks. Regardless, Daladier was able to prevail, mainly through the threat that was Adolf Hitler and Nazism(1). Daladier signed the Munich Pact in 1938, and sacrificed Sudetenland to Hitler in order to preserve the peace. This did not work; the pact only managed to stall the war for a short time (2). |
