Winston Churchill was born on November 30, 1874 to parents Lord Randolph Churchill and Jeannie Jerome. He came from a very established family. He was a somewhat rebellious student, and didn't do very well at either of the first two schools he went to, however, he went to a boarding school at age of 14 and later went into a military career(1).
Churchill was in the British army for a short period of time, but he did a lot. He was a part of the Fourth Hussars and participated in the Battle of Omdurman. While serving, he also wrote many reports on military happenings. Churchill joined Parliament at 26 years old, and was appointed to the Prime Minister's Cabinet. His job as president of the Board of Trade gave him much responsibility. He later served as the Minister of War and Air Colonial Secretary. He became chancellor in 1922, and later, the Prime Minister(2). Winston Churchill is considered a right-wing extremist, and many were concerned about his actions after the defeat of the Conservative government. During World War II, Churchill was the Prime Minister, and communicated with the United States. After the US had finally joined in the war, the Allies had a good chance of winning. He worked with President Roosevelt as well as with the leader of the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin in creating peace through the United Nations. After the war was over, however, Churchill was defeated in the election. He continued to do things in the government, until he began to get sick. Winston Churchill died on January 15, 1965 from the results of a stroke. He was 90 years old, and greatly mourned(1). |
