Franklin Roosevelt was born on January 30, 1883 to parents James Roosevelt and Sara Ann Delano Roosevelt. He was the only child of a wealthy family. His lifestyle was very elaborate, he was given private tutors and let do most anything he wanted.(1) Roosevelt was very close with his mother, even into adulthood. After going to school at Harvard, Franklin felt subpar, he wasn't an athlete like the other boys were, and he didn't have very good grades. This made him want to push himself harder by getting his degree in only three years(1).
At age 28, he ran for the Senate as a Democrat and surprisingly won. The state of New York had voted Republican for 32 years prior. He idolized Theodore Roosevelt (his 5th cousin), and strived to do the same jobs as he had(2). Roosevelt became president in the middle of a crisis. It was the Great Depression, and when he took office, there were many Americans that were in need of relief, jobs, and recovery. Roosevelt strived through everything, and was able to help, despite his wealthy upbringing. There were, however, still many people criticizing him for his spending(1). Roosevelt was diagnosed with polio at age of 39. After his death, it became a major icon of his legacy. He was gravely sick for most of his later life, and finally, on April 12, 1945, he died from a cerebral hemorrhage(2). |
